Description
Nutrient Agar is a general-purpose, solid microbiological growth medium formulated to support the cultivation of a wide range of non-fastidious microorganisms. It has been composed primarily of peptone (as a source of nitrogen and growth factors), beef extract (providing vitamins, minerals, and organic nutrients), and agar (a polysaccharide solidifying agent derived from seaweed). When prepared and sterilised, it can be poured into Petri dishes or tubes to create a firm surface on which bacteria and fungi may be isolated, counted, or sub-cultured. Its versatility has made it a standard choice for routine laboratory work, environmental sampling, and teaching demonstrations in microbiology.
